Impeachment
is the process that enables a legislative body to remove a public official from office; it is composed of two parts: (1) an accusation or indictment and (2) a trial.
This practice has its roots in English constitutional history. Members of Parliament employed impeachment against royally appointed Stuart officials in the 1600s. The concept was brought to the American colonies, where legislative assemblies used it against royal officials. Few other countries have provisions for impeachment.
The most important action the president can take is to lead the nation into war. Unfortunately this president recklessly and misleadingly took this nation into a disastrous war in Iraq. We recently learned from a Senate intelligence committee report that the president ignored reports that warned of the possibility of ethnic fighting, looting, an al Queda presence and meddling by Syria and Iraq. The intelligence community assessed prior to the war that establishing a stable democratic government in postwar Iraq would be long, difficult and turbulent challenge. Bush, during the campaign before the 2004 election, stated that Democrats had the same intelligence he had. This was not true, and many Democrats voted for giving Bush war funding based upon incomplete intelligence. For this reason alone, Bush should be impeached..
The president and vice president have taken oaths to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. They have violated this oath in numerous ways -
By "signing statements" whereby the president defies the intent of congress;
By endorsing torture and rendition in violation of international treaties;
Violating the Constitution by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel;
Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm;
Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant;
Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006;
Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution;
